THE ROLE OF WATER IN THE FORMATION OF CAVE DECORATIONS

Kolymvari Junior High School belongs to the National Environmental Network: Hailing the memory of the earth through geo-diversity, geoparks and man-made activities. 37 students ran a project about caves, the role of water in their formation and the importance of their protection. Speleologists from the Speleological Team of Chania came to our school and informed our students about those natural wonders. Then students went on a field trip to Melidoni Cave, also known as Gerontospilios, 95 kilometers from Chania. They had the opportunity to observe the formation of stalagmites with drops of water dripping from the edge of stalactites and took amazing photos of the cave decorations.
