MYTHOLOGICAL CHARACTER OF THE RIVERS: LAMIA

The lamia is a siren from the Basque mythology. Lamiak, laminak or amilamiak live in the river and they are very beautiful. They stay at the river bank combing their long hair with a golden comb; they easily charm men. The ones that live in the rivers have duck or goat feet and fish tail the ones in the sea. This is a story about one shepherd and a lamia:

A young shepherd from Ereño fell in love with a beautiful lamia.

This lamia, dressed in gold, came out of a cave. When the young boy saw her, he suddenly fell in love and wanted to marry her. He told his mother about the girl and she said: “Have a look at her feet!”. When the shepherd went back to the mountain, there he saw her combing her hair. Just then he realized that she had  palmed feet like ducks.

The poor boy did not want to get married, but he was sick and thrilled with love. In the funeral, there was a beautiful lady who had not stopped crying. The crowd reached the Ereño church, but the lady did not enter, nor did anyone see it again. Only the boy's mother heard everything, and then commented in the town.

Since then, the Lamiak moved away from the village.
