The visit of High School of Kolymvari to the Museum of Cretan Herbs |
The High School of Kolymvari organized a visit within the Erasmus+ Project “Mission Possible Health” on the 9th January 2018 with a group of 9 students and 2 teachers. These students are taking part the project and they visited the Museum of Cretan Herbs – Herbarium Jacques Zaffran at Kolymvari. This museum is housed in a building of the Orthodox Academy of Crete since 2008. It includes an exhibit chamber, laboratory and hosting rooms for the researchers. The main treasures of the museum are the approximately 6.000 herbs of the Cretan Herbs Collection, offered to the Orthodox Academy of Crete in 2003 by the French Professor of Botany, Jacques Zaffran. He has also written a book in French (1990) about the flora of Crete. Professor Zaffran has settled in Crete since 2004 in order to continue the study of the herbs and the enrichment of the collection as much as possible.
During our visit at the museum we observed the herbs of the exhibition and the manager of the museum pointed out that some of them are endangered, while some other species are under threat. Everyone should be sensitive and concerned about their care, of course with the assistance of the scientists and the state. Nowdays, the contribution of the herbs in our health, as well as their use in Medicine – Pharmaceutics is highly important. In addition, there is a botanical garden next to the museum, with significant samples of the Cretan flora, such as plants of the Bible, endemic and under-threat plants of our land.
