Greek herbs and plants among the treasures of the Bodleian Library in Oxford University |
Between 1806 and 1840, the 'Flora Graeca', one the world’s most expensive and magnificent natural history books was published. This was the culmination of botanical exploration in the eastern Mediterranean during the late 1780s by the Oxford Professor of Botany John Sibthorp and the Central European botanical artist Ferdinand Bauer. Following this journey, Bauer produced extraordinary watercolours of some of the plants and animals he saw.
Our students Marenia Anastasaki and Katerina Archontaki went through all ten volumes of Flora Graeca drawings and found the Cretan herbs and plants appearing in them!
